Welcome “If you feel like you’re just muddling through, remember Socrates: “True knowledge exists in knowing you know nothing”. So, if you roll with your lack of knowledge about your baby and set about learning about him as well as you can, then you’ll be a truly wise mother.”
Baby and Me- the first
100 days is by an
ordinary mum who is also a writer and small-time philosopher, who wanted
to map out and document “the fog”, as those first 100 days are also known:
“I really loved becoming a
mum, but I also felt there were things I just didn’t want to talk about
with other people, I felt they’d think I was a bad mother to say I wasn’t
enjoying every minute. So I wrote it down, and turned it into this book.”
But
Baby and Me- the first 100
days, is also
easy to read, because who has time to read great chunks
of stuff at this amazing time of your life? It has tips and comments on
what to expect on a day-by-day basis,
with an index because
your baby will
probably do different things on slightly
different days. It also has diary space for you, the new mother, to record what happens in the first 100 days of your baby’s life. “Those first 100 days are also known as ‘dreamtime’, because you look back and you can’t remember any of it except that you didn’t get any sleep,” Serena says. “A great way of beating the blues is through prayer, getting out walking and singing, all things which my husband and I used to do – at all hours – to get through the roller coaster ride of our first child’s first few months.
“All those things are
documented, as well as quotes and other things that are designed to help
shift your mindset from workforce, to homeforce. Because mums and dads
have incredible power to shape the world, they just don’t seem to realise
it yet.” Serena Williams is a Melbourne based writer and commentator. A journalist by trade, Serena also worked in political spin doctoring for more than eight years, specialising in health communications with first the Victorian, then the Federal, Government.
Coming from a large family,
Serena thought it would be easy to become a mother – and was shocked that
it was such hard work. “Everyone tells you your life will change when you have kids, but they never really describe what they mean by that. Basically your whole vision of yourself goes out the door when the baby comes in. ”For me I suddenly went from being at the top end of my field, to what I thought was bottom of the pile in society’s eyes. I was just stunned at how many people don’t appreciate how hard, or how vibrant it is, to be a mother.” “Having our first baby was a brilliant time – but it was also an incredible shock. I wrote Baby and Me to tell other mums that it’s okay to feel that way, and also to show them some ways that worked for me in getting into being a mother, which has become the greatest job I’ve ever done”
